Halloween Flash Fiction! from BA, Julia, Kiernan and Sean

We've each writting some Halloween Flash Fiction for you today! It's our favorite way to Trick or Treat. We wish all our readers a very Happy Halloween. May all your tricks be treats.

"We need candy."

Gus stared at his mate, trying hard not to growl. "Sammy. Chocolate is not for pups, you know that." Surely his feline mate could understand that.

"But it's Halloween!" Sam came up to him, those green eyes bright as the sun through a bottle. "They're going to trick or treat. They've got costumes and we've built it up and..."

"No chocolate."

"No worries, Sammy. I got your back." Connor came sauntering up, bouncy kitty from top to bottom. "Look what all I got for the little ones. Carob covered kibbles. Peanut butter bites. Candy carrots with yogurt..."

Everything was wrapped and packaged in orange wax paper.

"Where did you...Are those wax lips?"

Sammy leapt at Connor, hugging the bobcat tight. "You saved Halloween!"

"I just found what you need. What our family needs."

Gus shot Brock a look, and the big wolf shrugged.

Right. What their family needed.

Happy Halloween.

“Wow, look at you.” Jack stared at Miles, who wore an amazing warrior sort of costume with a leather kilt and a harness and lots of oil. “Wow.”

Miles flexed, showing off all that lean muscle that no one ever knew was there. No one but Jack and Kenneth. “Happy Halloween.”

“Uh-huh.” It was almost midnight, the kids having been sugar hyped from the trunk or treat down at the high school. “Are we going somewhere?” If so, Jack was the last one to know, and who was watching the kids?

“Nope.” Miles drifted closer. “This is a private party.”

Jack felt a grin spread across his face, and his cock lifted in his jeans.

“What kind of party?” Kenneth asked, his voice a growl as he slipped into the room. He’d been letting out the dog and locking up.

“Masquerade,” Miles said immediately.

“Do we have costumes?” Kenneth joined him, pressing close, his hands freezing cold.

Miles’s eyes glowed gold for a moment. “You just get naked. I’m the conquering barbarian and you two are my captives.”

Jack’s body definitely took an interest. “I like this party.”

Miles went to their bedroom door to lock it. “I thought you might. Now strip.”

Clothes began to fly, and Jack chuckled.

This was the easiest Halloween costume ever.

Jack, Miles, and Kenneth come from Wolfmanny, available at Dreamspinner Press, and Amazon.

Hey y’all! Here’s a little flash fiction set in my Seti’s Heart universe. It takes place after the events in the book. Seti and Logan are having a bit of a disagreement brought about by Seti’s misunderstanding of the Halloween tradition of dressing up in costume. 😊

Seti’s Heart is available from Dreamspinner Press.

Seti’s Heart blurb: A vengeful god’s curse took everything from the Egyptian pharaoh Seti: his name, his position, and even his lover. After many long centA vengeful god’s curse took everything from the Egyptian pharaoh Seti: his name, his position, and even his lover. After many long centuries relegated to a musty sarcophagus, he’s awakened when a graduate student working in the museum where he is stored stumbles upon him.

Logan, working as a curator to fund his education, figures he’s screwed when he accidentally awakens the ancient ruler. It’ll be career suicide to claim the mummy came back to life, but it’s either that or be labeled a thief. Little does he know, those are the least of his problems. A society of archaeologists is hot on their trail, determined to uncover the secret of Seti’s immortality, and then there’s the little matter of an angry god who doesn’t appreciate Logan meddling in his work. But the biggest problem might be Seti himself, who’ll stop at nothing to get into Logan’s pants—and his heart.

Seti’s Halloween by Kiernan Kelly

Seti’s arm, banded with muscle under taut, smooth skin the color of caramel, blocked Logan’s way. Logan tried to duck under it, but Seti was as quick as he was strikingly handsome, and in an instant had Logan pressed against the wall, pinned there by his powerful body. Suspicion narrowed his eyes.

“I will ask you once again, Logan. Where is he?”

Despite Seti’s greater mass and muscle, Logan refused to be intimidated. “And I’ll answer you again. There’s no one here.”

“Then how do you explain this?” Seti reached to the bed they usually shared and picked up a piece of blue and gold striped cloth.

“I’ve already told you. It’s a costume, Seti. For Halloween. Lighten up, will you?”

Seti growled, a deep, dark sound that was both menacing and starkly erotic. “I am no fool, Logan. This is the garb of the pharaohs. Where do you have him hidden?” His gaze darted toward the closet, and he pushed away from Logan, stalking to it. He pulled the accordion doors open, succeeding in ripping one of them off its hinge. He bellowed into the closet. “Come out and face me, you son of a jackal!”

“Come on, Seti, don’t be ridiculous. I don’t have a pharaoh hidden in our closet.” Logan grimaced as Seti began tearing clothing from the hangers and tossing them over his shoulder. It was really becoming an effort to not lose his temper. “Stop it! You’re making a mess, and I’m not going to clean it up!”

It wasn’t a large closet, and it didn’t take Seti long to empty it. Instead of being reassured that Logan wasn’t hiding a pharaoh under the extra quilts and pillows, Seti turned to the bed. He fell to his knees and looked underneath it.

Again, he wasn’t deterred when he came up empty-handed. “Tell me, Logan. Am I not enough for you? Am I such a poor lover that you would take another to your bed?”

Logan felt anger flush his cheeks red.  All efforts to remain calm flew out the proverbial window, and he shouted. “Okay, now you’re just pissing me off. For the last time, it’s a costume for Halloween. Remember? Chris and Leo’s party? I told you about it a month ago!”

Seti only yelled louder.  “Do I look the fool to you? You expect me to believe that one night a year grown men and women dress in outlandish garb? Why?What purpose would it serve?”

A new voice shocked them both into silence. “It’s fun.”

They turned to see a green-skinned man wearing a tall, white conical hat and little else standing in the doorway to the bedroom. His only other adornment was a short kilt that wrapped around his slender hips. His body didn’t have Seti’s mass, but it was muscular and perfectly sculpted. A wry smile lifted his lips. “What? I could practically hear you yelling all the way down in the Underworld. I came to see what all the hubbub was about. I thought maybe Set came back to gnaw on your asses.”

“Oh, Great Osiris, welcome to our humble domicile.” Seti bowed low and touched his forehead with his fist. “We are not worthy company for your glorious presence.”

Osiris snorted. “Please, Seti, enough with the ass kissing. I don’t want to have to explain the lip prints on my derriere to Isis.”

Logan blinked, then grinned. “Osiris! Finally, someone with a brain. Will you please explain to Seti about the human tradition of dressing up on Halloween?”

“Hey kid. I would ask how things are going for you two, but it appears I already have my answer. He’s a jealous little monkey, huh?” Osiris smiled back. “Seti, listen up. In today’s day and age, Halloween is just a day for everyone to cut loose and have fun. Children dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for candy. Adults get dressed up and go to parties. It’s fun.”

Seti didn’t look convinced. “But this is the Nemes headdress of a pharaoh!”

Osiris nodded. “I know. I have one just like it, although I don’t wear it anymore. It’s so Eighteenth Dynasty.”

Seti turned toward Logan. “Why would you choose to wear this?”

Logan sighed. “It’s not for me, you big galoot. “it’s for you.” He took the headdress and placed it on Seti’s head. “This is the one day a year when you can dress like the king you are, and nobody will ask a million questions or try to lock you up in a psychiatric facility. Tonight you can be Seti, king of Egypt.”

Seti’s mouth popped open, and his expression warmed. “Oh. Oh, I was wrong, Logan. I am a fool.” He cupped Logan’s chin with his fingers, and leaned down until their lips nearly touched. “Forgive me?”

Osiris cleared his throat. “And on that note, I’m off. Just do me a favor -- stop with the yelling. You’re waking the dead -- literally -- and my job is hard enough as it is without dealing with a bunch of revved up souls. Ta ta, for now!”

Logan didn’t see Osiris disappear. All he saw were Seti’s dark eyes and the lust burning there. It seared his heart, and warmed his belly until his body began to react, his cock filling. “Fuck, Seti. Just kiss me already.”

“I am king,” Seti whispered against Logan’s lips. “But I obey.”

Flynn, Blaine and the guys are from The Supers. Now available at Dreamspinner Press.

The Supers do Halloween

Flynn and the guys were sitting around eating pizza, as they did.

“Halloween’s Tuesday,” Blaine pointed out after taking a drink of his Coke.

Everyone grunted in acknowledgement.

“So what do ghost hunters do on Halloween?” Flynn asked.

“Are you kidding?” Will asked. “We hunt ghosts.”

“But wouldn’t that be like a busman’s holiday?” Flynn wanted to know. He wasn’t being an ass, he was just curious. “Working on Halloween...”

Blaine gave him a strange look.

“What?” Did he have grease on his face or something?

“Halloween, and All Spirits Day – which is November 1, by the way – are the days that the spirit world is closest to our world. They are the best days for ghost hunting!”

“Yeah? Really?”

“You didn’t know this?” Jason asked.

“Nope.” He guessed you really did learn something new every day.

Blaine put a hand on his thigh. “You’ve never felt that your mother’s presence was more… uh, present on Halloween?”

He thought about it, he really did, but he couldn’t say he’d noticed her more on Halloween than any other time of the year. “She mostly comes when I need her.”

“It’s sweet that you think that’s the only times she shows up.” Blaine looked smug.

“Have you seen her?” he demanded.

“Not seen her so much as felt her. She hangs around you most of the time.”

His eyes went wide. That could be embarrassing. “Seriously?”

“Oh, God.” He and Blaine had made love just this afternoon. He wasn’t sure he was going to be able to keep doing that if his mother’s ghost was watching!

Blaine chuckled softly. “Don’t worry, she makes herself scarce whenever you get kissy face.”

“I do not have kissy face.”

“You do, too and it’s adorable.”

Will snorted. “You totally do, but I wouldn’t call it adorable.”

Flynn didn’t care what Will thought. He gave Blaine a fond look, though. “So are we going to make my mom disappear tonight?”

“Maybe tomorrow morning – tonight we have to go out and find the spirits. After all it’s your first time on Halloween.”

Flynn knew he really was in love that it didn’t bother him that much that Blaine would rather go ghost hunting with him than make love.

“I still want candy, though.”

“That’s Will’s department.” Jason grabbed another slice.

“Don’t worry, I’ve got us covered.” Will leaned over the side of the couch and pulled up a backpack. He opened it, reveling four bags of different types of candies and chocolates. “Happy?”

“Oh yeah, I think I am.” Flynn was more than happy – ghosts, love and chocolate, what else could a man ask for?

My Newest Mpreg Release by S.C. Wynne

Hello all you little Cafe Risque peeps!

I have a new release coming, hopefully October 31st, and it's the third book in my mpreg series Bodyguards and Babies. It's called Manny's Surprise Baby. The title went through many changes and this is the one I settled on, finally.

Pierce MacPherson is a solar eclipse omega with a chip on his shoulder. He was in a horrible relationship where his alpha sold him to other alphas for their pleasure, and now that he's free, he definitely has a thing against alphas.

Seth Rider works for Shield and he's an alpha with no desire to settle down with one woman. But when he discovers that a one night stand eight years ago produced a daughter he'd never heard of, he steps up to the challenge.

The problem is, Seth doesn't know the first thing about raising a kid. Pierce has some experience working with kids and when they meet, Pierce is guilted in to helping out for a week. It's only supposed to be one week. But when Seth starts having unusual sexual feelings toward Pierce, things get a little complicated. And when the two men give into their urges, and Pierce gets pregnant, things get even more muddled.

I find writing Mpreg kind of relaxing. I'm not sure why really. Maybe because I can allow the characters to be more vulnerable. You're dealing with pregnancy, which is such an emotional time, it's impossible not to focus on the feels more than usual. Because Mpreg is really ALL about the feels.

When I started this series, I wasn't really sure how the first book would do. I'd never written Mpreg before so I wasn't sure if my existing readers would be interested. But many of them were and all of the Mpreg books so far have done extremely well. I'm very glad I took the chance!

I realized by this third book, that tying in bodyguards is getting tricky! I mean, to have all these pregnancies only occurring to the bodyguards who work at Shield is becoming suspicious. Is there a pregnancy virus going around that only affects the guys at Shield? lol Because of this dilemma, I've decided to start the next three book series with cops. Who doesn't love cops, right? It will be the same tomfoolery you've grown used to, but instead of bodyguards at least one of the characters will be a cop. I'm looking forward to it. I think it will be fun! :)

Well, have an amazing weekend and I'll talk to you next Saturday.

Up and Coming by Felice Stevens

Hi everyone! While I'm STILL not over jet lag from another fabulous GRL, I have been hard at work on my next release which, I'll reveal here, is entitled, Everything Comes Back to You. It's a mashup of two of my favorites books, The Arrangement and One Call Away. If you remember, the mother of Jack's little school friend had a brother, Blake whom she tried to set up with Carter for a hot second. This is Blake's story now. The other MC is our guy Jeremy, Noah's brother from One Call Away. Both Carter and Noah make appearances in the book and you'll find out why Blake disappeared on Jeremy and catch up with Carter and Reed and Noah and Oren. πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

I'm also working on a cookbook filled with recipes from all  the food I've mentioned in my books, but especially, Learning to Love, The Way to His Heart and All or Nothing. If you have anything specific you'd like to see mentioned, drop me a comment here, or send me an email at felice@felicestevens.com! I'd love to know. Right now I have all the recipes at the back of Learning to Love, plus a few other special ones, including Adam's mother's Bowl of Red (Chili)

I thought I'd leave you with a little unedited teaser from Everything Comes Back to You since I've only mentioned briefly how Blake and Jeremy met and that's always one of my favorite parts of a romance novel. The first meet.

Everything Comes Back to You
He headed to the subway for the half hour ride home to Brooklyn. It had begun flurrying when he was in the restaurant and now the snow had begun falling in earnest. It was only mid-November but it was already cold as fuck. Jeremy shivered inside his thin jacket and hustled across the street, anxious to get inside to the warmth of the train station. The half-hour long train ride home from Queens to Brooklyn gave him enough time to contemplate that he must be the worst judge of character in the universe because damn if his last few dates weren’t major disasters. Olivia only wanted him for a free gym membership, Carlton was too wrapped up in his mother and now Brent was a steroid user. Three strikes and he was out.
“No more.” He trudged up the steps to find it snowing heavily as well. The wind whipped around and he bent his head to begin the two block trek to his apartment. Happy to be almost home, Jeremy looked forward to his sofa, an evening of Netflix and a beer or three. He shivered and faced the wind, the snow driving sideways into his face.
The sky had taken on the eerie glow it often did during snowstorms and the streets seemed hushed, almost as if he were the only one about. Jeremy had only managed to walk half a block when he saw a person struggling with two grocery bags and an umbrella. The wind had flipped the umbrella inside out and it offered little protection as it was from the hearty gusts. As he got closer, he saw it was a man about his age, but dressed warmly in a puffy down jacket and heavy boots which were rapidly becoming obscured by the falling snow.
“Need some help?”
The man turned his attention from fumbling with his umbrella to Jeremy.
‘Uh, yeah, sure. I’m trying to turn this stupid thing the right way around but I don’t think it’ll do much good anyway huh?”
The furry hood of his parka framed the man’s face and Jeremy glimpsed a few dark waves that had escaped to curl over his forehead, but he was more fascinated by the man’s soft-looking pink lips. Dark framed glasses, covered with dots of water and dissolving snow sat askew on the bridge of his nose and Jeremy blinked several times, rocked by his instant attraction to this cute guy.
“Um, here. Let me take these for you.” Without waiting for a response, Jeremy plucked the bags out of the man’s hands and waited while he wrestled with the umbrella. The battle was lost when a sudden gust ripped the fabric completely off one side, leaving it flapping in the wind.
“Shit.” The expression of disgust on the man’s face was priceless and despite the freezing cold and creeping numbness in his hands, Jeremy couldn’t help laughing.
“Listen. I live right on the next block. Why don’t you come up and get dry and have a cup of coffee. Maybe by that time the snow will have stopped.”
Uncertain hazel eyes met his. “Uh that’s nice of you, but—”
“Weird since we don’t know each other?” At the man’s nod, Jeremy lifted the grocery bags. “I’d shake your hand by mine are full. I’m Jeremy Strauss. I’m not a murderer or a con artist but what I am is fucking freezing here. I promise if you want to leave after five minutes feel free but I will tell you I make a bass ass Irish coffee.”

“I’m Blake, Blake Myers and um, if you’re sure…” He bit that full lower pink lip and another sizzle of lust burned through Jeremy.

Have a great weekend and Happy Reading!!

3. When I could eat candy, anything chocolate was my favorite, but I loved candy corn, too.
4. Back in the early 80s, before they made any store bought costumes for it, we made a Shredder costume for my son. It looked really cool - we used cut up foam curlers to make his spikes and spray painted them silver.

And I'm thinking, gee, you didn't go to a whole lot of trouble there. Then he opened his bag and said "Braaaaaaaiiiiinnnns" instead of trick or trick. I loved it!
5. Werewolves.

GRL and the Reclusive Author Personality by S.C. Wynne

Morning all!

I'm enjoying seeing all the photos of GRL all over Facebook and Twitter. But I'll admit, a piece of me feels left out, even though it's of my own doing. Part of the reason I didn't go this year was expense. GRL is expensive as an author, (maybe more so as a reader because you buy all the books! lol) But it isn't simply expense that makes me hesitate to go to conventions and get togethers.

It's shyness.

Maybe it's a clichΓ© to paint the picture of the hermit author,  but I am, and always have been, rather shy. I can fake it and obviously some people are more relaxing to be around than others. But essentially, I'm not someone who likes crowds or situations where I don't know anyone. But I don't think I'm alone in that.

I think sometimes we fight who we are. We want to be like others because we admire the way they handle situations. For many years I beat myself up for not being as happy in the spotlight as others. Because it can be confusing when you enjoy the attention you get for things you do, but still be uncomfortable about it as well. But I think I've come to grips with the fact that I am essentially a shy person. And that's okay.

The best way I've found to manage my natural timidity, is to be with a partner. I hate going somewhere alone. Yes, even as a sort of grown-up. I like to have a wingman. Someone I can turn to who I know will always laugh at my jokes. Give me a warm smile. Support me. Even when I'm not the cool kid in the room. Often that's my sisters. My husband. My kids. It's just nice to know at least one person in the room likes you.

But all that being said, I also know I'll miss out on a lot of wonderful times in life if I give into my shyness and just stay home in my pajamas the rest of my life.

So who knows? Maybe next year you'll see me at GRL. I would say I'll be easy to recognize because I'll be the shy, quiet one in the room. But I have a feeling there are a lot more out there who are like me, than are not.

And if I do show up and you do come say hi, one thing you can count on is I will always laugh at your jokes and give you a warm smile.

Jared's Evolution, following your heart, and why BDSM?

I have a new book release!!! YAY. I will start off by saying I'm incredibly proud of this book. I was scared to write it but passionate about writing it and it feels really good to have followed my heart. Jared and Kieran's journey means a lot to me...that being said, I KNOW it isn't for everyone. If you're not interested in BDSM or Daddy Kink, you likely will not enjoy this book. I put the warning in the blurb, because I wanted everyone to know what they were getting into. I created the "Desires Unleashed Collection" with a logo so people would know what they're getting into. If you see one of my books with the logo and you don't enjoy BDSM or kink, you might want to skip that book. BUT, if you see a new book without that logo, you can expect the Riley you've been used to over the years.

I wrote a little something on my Facebook page, and I thought I'd share it with you guys. It gives you a bit of an idea on how I feel and this book.

I've had a few people ask me why BDSM? Why now?

First, let me start by saying no reader should ever read something they’re not interested in. I get it. I want to read books I think I’ll enjoy and you likely do too…but on the flipside, all writers should also write what they’re interested in, what they’re passionate about. Because someone has never written something before, that doesn’t mean the interest hasn’t always been there…and if it’s a new interest, that’s okay too.

I can’t write something if my heart isn’t into it. Writing comes from love and passion for me so if I write something…I’m passionate about it and not doing it for trends, shock value or anything else. The question on why to write this or that just doesn’t sit well to me, even when I KNOW the people asking mean no offense. But it feels like…why would you write this weird, different thing when you could write vanilla and that reminds me of times myself and good friends have been asked by publishing…since the book isn't about race, why write this black character when they could be white? Or getting asked why write m/m when you could be writing m/f (real questions I've gotten)? The second I’m not writing with my heart, that means I shouldn’t be writing.

From the beginning of my career I’ve always written what is in my heart, and I’ve always believed everyone should see themselves in the stories they read. Even back to my early days of YA before there were hashtags for diversity, I wrote diverse characters. We need books for everyone and I’ve always tried not to limit myself in which stories I tell, even if it’s something new for me. There’s always a need for different stories. And sometimes…a character is black not because it’s a race story…but just because that’s who they are. Sometimes a character is gay not because it’s a coming out story…but just because it’s who they are. Sometimes a character practices BDSM just because that’s who they are too. (actually, I should say most of the time in all of these situations instead of sometimes)

The truth is, I’ve wanted to write this book for a long time. The truth is, this story came from my heart in a big way. Maybe five years ago, I never would have seen myself writing this book but that’s the beauty in being human…and in books, IMO. We grow and learn and change—much like Jared does in the book. I’ve learned SO much about myself through reading and writing. My viewpoints and world has been opened in so many ways. I feel more secure in who I am as a person, in ways I never have before. It’s funny how those things happen when you don’t realize they’re happening…but man, pretty incredible too.

We’re all evolving all the time—or we should be. As writers, our books evolve. As readers, our reading tastes often evolve, which doesn’t necessarily mean leaving the old behind—just expanding to see and share and experience MORE things, which I think is important. Certain topics are being written about and read about more because…well, I think because we’re seeing that we don’t have to keep ideas, thoughts and feelings locked away because they aren’t the popular opinion or because they're "different". We’re seeing it’s okay to talk about and do things that everyone might not understand…but they don’t have to understand, really. That’s okay as long as we respect those differences in people.

So…I wrote this book because it means a lot to me. I wrote it because I’m passionate about it. I wrote it because it explores topics that I feel strongly about. I wrote it knowing that it wouldn’t sell as well and not as many people would be interested in it, because it was important to me. Does that mean I’ll be writing all kink now? Nope! That’s why I started the Desires Unleashed collection. When you see that logo, you know what you’re getting into. If that isn’t your thing, that’s fine. Just keep going and hopefully pick up the next book. If that logo isn’t on a Riley novel, then you know what to expect as well.

Like I said, everyone should read what they're interested in. If you think you'd enjoy it, I hope you give it a try. If it's not your thing, I hope you'll give my next book that isn't "Desires Unleashed" a chance. There are SO many stories to tell--kink and not kink. So many stories to read--kink and not kink. How lucky are we to have so many incredible stories to choose from? How lucky am I to be able to follow my muse, wherever she takes me, and to write stories I'm proud of?

My next single author book that isn't part of Desires Unleashed will be the second Last Chance book, coming early 2018.

For now, those who are interested in kink and BDSM, here's a little about Jared.

He wants to dominate me…to discipline me. He wants me to call him Daddy…

I’ve always taken care of myself—worked hard to become king of the courtroom and excel in the cutthroat business of winning cases. I’m fierce…brutal…confident. I’m a lie. Underneath my armor, I’m drowning, losing myself under the weight of life. At thirty-three years old, I should be able to handle the pressure.

My neighbor Kieran sees past my spotless suits and manufactured control to the real Jared. The one who secretly craves being dominated, to serve, and to give up control—not just in the bedroom, but in every aspect of my personal life.

I can’t want this…but I do… When I’m under Kieran’s command—spanked, rewarded and caged—I’m free. With Kieran’s care and guidance, my mind is unburdened as my body soars to new heights, and Kieran becomes what we both need him to be: Daddy.

It’s a journey of dominance and submission—of rules, schedules, security and discipline. He opens my world, teaches me, changes me…but he doesn’t let me in. It’s temporary, Daddy tells me, and I’d be wise to remember that, so I don’t get hurt.

Warning: Jared’s Evolution contains BDSM elements, domestic discipline, spanking, and daddy kink—without age play—between two consenting adults. If any of those things offend you, reading this book might not be a good idea.

Jared’s Evolution is part of the Desires Unleashed collection. Some books in this collection will have darker themes. Please be aware Desires Unleashed are er*tic and not your typical Riley Hart romance. You can expect the mental and emotional journey to be led by the physical/s*xual moments—which will be intense, frequent and kinky.

Available exclusively from Amazon.

My Work In Progress by S.C. Wynne

Morning, all! I'm a little late today because it's my birthday and I got distracted! lol

I have the third book in my Mpreg series; Bodyguards and Babies, coming out toward the end of this month. It's Pierce's story. Here's a little snippet  of My Surprise Omega Baby, to wet your appetite.

We’d agreed Pierce would stay with me while Emily was here because my hours were so screwy at work. I made up the other guest room for Pierce, making sure he had clean towels. I also took the liberty of putting his backpack on his bed, since he’d left it on the couch in the front room. I went back to studying my new client’s bio, but by eleven o’clock my eyes were tired and I closed my laptop down. The two of them were still talking quietly in Emily’s room and I tried to listen in. I felt like the only way I’d find anything out about Emily was if I did it without her knowing I was around. She was way too shut off with me. But their voices were soft, so I crept out of my office and I stood in the hallway listening.

“Mommy didn’t come home a lot of nights,” Emily said.

“Were you alone then?” Pierce asked quietly.

“Mostly. Sometimes she’d have our neighbor Ted watch me. But he wasn’t always available. I didn’t like being alone because the apartment seemed to have so many creaky noises at night.”

“Was it her job that kept her out?”

“Sometimes.” Her voice was soft.

The vulnerability in her tone made my heart hurt. I felt guilty that I’d never been there for her, even though I knew it wasn’t really my fault.

“Pierce… how did your mommy die?” She asked.

There was a small silence and then Pierce said, “Suicide.”

Emily gasped. “I’m sorry.”

“Thanks. She was really depressed when my dad went to prison again. I think taking care of me was just too much for her on her own.”

“But that’s what mommies do.”

He gave a little laugh. “Most of them. Mine was different.”

“My mommy was lonely. I think that’s why she liked to go out a lot with those men.” She sniffed. “I miss her.”

There was a rustling and I suspected Pierce had hugged Emily. “It’s okay. Of course you miss her.

But your daddy wants to take good care of you and keep you safe.”

“He doesn’t want me.”

“What?” Pierce’s voice went up. “That’s not true. He was really happy and excited when he learned about you.”

My face warmed at Pierce’s lie. I’d been freaked out and selfish when I’d first found out about Emily. I was ashamed that my first thought had been how a kid would change my life. But now that I’d met Emily, and she wasn’t just this faceless stranger, I definitely felt protective toward her. And I did want to get to know her and make her happy. I wasn’t sure how to go about that, since she seemed almost afraid of me, but that was what I wanted.

“Do you really think so?” Emily’s voice was husky with emotion.

“I do. I know so. He’s a good man.”

I was surprised at how complimentary Pierce was being. Maybe this was just what he said about all the parents when the kids needed comfort. Because he hadn’t seemed that impressed with me when we’d first met.

“His house is pretty,” Emily said.

“Give him a chance. I think you’ll see he’s a good daddy.”

I heard the springs of the bed and I rushed back to my office. I didn’t want to get caught eavesdropping. I sat at my desk and pretended to be going through a desk drawer when Pierce popped his head in my office.

“I’m going to go to bed now.” I couldn’t tell from his expression if he suspected I’d been listening in.

“Oh, okay.” I stood for some odd reason. “Goodnight then.”

He hesitated and then he walked into the room. “She’ll warm up to you.”

His sympathetic tone bugged me a little. I didn’t want him feeling sorry for me, but I also knew he was trying to be nice. “I’m sure you’re right.”

He shifted uneasily as if he a wanted to leave, but still felt like he should say something else. “She’s a sweet kid. She just doesn’t know what will happen and so she’s scared. I think she’s afraid you’ll quit on her.”

“Why would I do that?”

“Because she’s a kid who’s been passed around from grown-up to grown-up who didn’t really want to be bothered with her.”

“If I didn’t want her here, she wouldn’t be here.” I lifted my chin. “The only reason I wasn’t in her life from the beginning was I didn’t know about her.”

“I hope that’s true.”

“Why would I lie?”

His eyes darted to my face. “Because you’d look like a jerk otherwise.”

I bristled. “Do you seriously think I knew about her all this time, but just didn’t want to be bothered?”

He shrugged. “You wouldn’t be the first dad to do that.”

“That didn’t happen.”

“I guess it seems weird her mom wouldn’t have reached out sooner. Kids ain’t cheap. Why wouldn’t her mom at least have hit you up for some child support?”

My face felt tight as I gave a little smile. “I didn’t shirk my responsibilities toward Emily. I didn’t know about her. Period.”

“I’m kind of insulted you’d think otherwise.”

“Don’t get pissed. Alphas aren’t known for their selflessness.”

“Bullshit. Alphas take care of their omegas.” I scowled. “Look at Riley and Colin.”

He chuffed. “Jury is still out on that one, if you ask me.”

I shook my head, trying to stamp down my irritation. “They’re solid. Riley treats Colin like gold.”

He gave a raspy laugh. “What a surprise, an alpha standing up for an alpha.”

“Colin was my friend first. If I’m biased toward anyone, it’s Colin. But I can see how great Riley is.”

“I don’t want to argue. I only wanted to reassure you that, odds are, Emily will warm up to you eventually.”

“Thanks.” He’d just spent the last minute insulting me, so it took a little work to force that word from my tight throat.

He moved closer and his eyes were a deep blue in the dim light. “Maybe tomorrow we can go buy the paint and some curtains to decorate her room. She needs a space of her own. Oh, and she’ll need some clothes too for school.”

“Okay.” I frowned. “Shit. Wait… I have to work.”

A little smile touched his full lips as he held out his hand. “Give me your credit card. I’ll take care of everything.”

I pulled my wallet from my back pocket and handed him my American Express card. “Remember, you’re shopping for Emily, not yourself.”

He wrinkled his brow. “Don’t worry. I don’t let alphas buy me things. Otherwise they think they own me.”

The firm press of his fingers against mine, and something about his husky voice sent an odd shiver through me. I was perplexed by why he seemed to affect me physically, when I wasn’t usually in the least bit attracted to guys. “I don’t want to own anyone.”

“That’s what they all say.”

His playful tone coaxed a grudging laugh from me. “I’m serious.”

“Uh, huh.”

Putting my hands on my hips, I shook my head. “Are you always this annoying, or am I just special?”

“Being an alpha, I’m sure you think you’re special.”

My lips twitched. “Jesus, I have to endure a week of this sass?”

“Looks like it.” He smirked as he turned to leave. “Goodnight, Seth.”

“Night, Pierce.”

I made a point of not watching him leave. No matter how tempted I was.

Hope you enjoyed that little taste! And have a wonderful rest of your weekend. :)

Prepping For GRL

Hi everyone! Well it's the weekend before GRL which means I am in a frenzy of sorting and packing. I'm so excited because I'm one of the people who LOVES GRL. This is my third year and each time it's gotten better and better.

I can't wait to see friends I've made on line and only get to see once a year. For that reason alone, I love GRL. I love spending time with other authors talking books and the craft of writing. And maybe have a drink or two or......well you get the picture.

Then there are the readers who make this all possible for loving our books and breathing life into our characters. Nothing is more exciting to an author than hearing people talk about their books and/or characters as if they're real. Which of course to me they are.

Here is where I'll be during the event next week. I arrive in Denver on Wednesday, October 18th.

Wednesday during the day are retreat events for newbies and I will be meeting with some of my virgin GRL people to give them tips on taking it all in. At 9 pm, there is a narrator panel, and I'm thrilled that Nick Russo will be reading from The Shape of You! I can't wait for you to hear him!
After the narrator panel, come find me and we'll hang out and have a drink! I'll have some special swag for you and I can't wait to meet you all and get a chance to chat.

Thursday, the official start of GRL will find me at an Author Lounge from 11:00 am to 11:45 am. Don't forget to collect stickers/stamps from each of the sponsoring authors toward the prizes to be awarded at the Wild Wild West Saturday night party.

At 2:30 Join Jaime Reese, Ethan Day and myself in our storyteller panel:

"Not Your Mama's Contemporary Romance," where we delve into how the genre of romance has evolved over the years. There will be fun games of MMadlibs with exciting prizes, so make sure you come join us!! If you've ever played Mad Libs as a kid or at a party you KNOW how much fun these games can get!

Thursday night I can't wait to party the night away with the Cockyboys, starting at 9:30 pm!!

On Friday, my Author Lounge is also from 11:00 am to 11:45am so if you missed me the first time, now's our chance. Friday night is another dance party, and I'm sure we'll be hanging out in the lounge afterwards chatting away the hours.

Saturday is the big bookselling fair, starting at 10 am and lasting until 1:30. Make sure you come by and get some fun swag and pick up one of your favorite books. I will be selling books as well as distributing my pre-orders.

I can't wait to see new friends and old and give you all a hug.

Look What's On Its Way!!!!!

Welcome to St. Giles Maryland, a quiet, rather prosperous town on the Eastern Shore where for the most part life is simple. Everyone pretty much knows each other and looks out for each other... at least they like to think so.
The town prosperity comes from the porcelain works. It employs a lot of people, provides good paying jobs, and the owner is philanthropic. The owner and richest man in town is also The Beast of St. Giles.

Taming the Beast Releases October 13.

The suspicious death of Dante Bartholomew’s wife changed him, especially in the eyes of the residents of St. Giles. They no longer see a successful businessman… only a monster they believe was involved. Dante’s horrific reputation eclipses the truth to the point that he sees no choice but to isolate himself and his heart.

The plan backfires when he meets counselor Beau Clarity and the children he works with. Beau and the kids see beyond the beastly reputation to the beautiful soul inside Dante, and Dante’s cold heart begins to thaw as they slip past his defenses. The warmth and hope Beau brings to Dante’s life help him see his entire existence—his trials and sorrows—in a brighter light.

But Dante’s secrets could rip happiness from their grasp… especially since someone isn’t above hurting those Dante has grown to love in order to bring him down.

Ask Andrew will return next week.  Please send me your questions!!!!!

Ask Andrew is your chance to ask questions of a gay romance author.  The questions can be about the writing process in general, writing sex scenes, gay men, sex, characters in romance, characters having sex... okay you probably get the picture.    I promise to answer your questions as frankly and with as much humor as I possibly can.

So if you have a question, please send it to andrewgreybooks@comcast.net.  This is different from my usual email so your questions don't get lost.  I will answer one question a week.

Please remember this is meant to be all in fun.  (I was going to say good, clean fun, but who wants that.)    So send me your questions and let's see what mischief we can get into.

The Supers

Hunting ghosts and finding more than they bargained for.

Blaine Franks is a member of the paranormal research group the Supernatural Explorers. When the group loses their techie to a cross-country move, newly graduated Flynn Huntington gets the job. Flynn fits in with the guys right off the bat, but when it comes to him and Blaine, it’s more than just getting along.

Things heat up between Blaine and Flynn as they explore their first haunted building together, an abandoned hospital. Their relationship isn’t all that progresses, though, and soon it seems that an odd bite on Blaine’s neck has become much more.

Hitchhiking ghosts, a tragic love story forgotten by time, and the mystery of room 204 round out a romance where the things that go bump in the night are real.

Blaine made sure his hair was smooth and braided, his shirt clean. “Okay, let’s do this.”

The light from the camera came on, and Blaine put on his best smile. “Welcome to the Eugene Thurston Memorial Hospital. I’m Blaine Franks, and with my buddies Flynn, Will, Jase, and Darnell, we’re the Supernatural Explorers.”

Flynn waved when Blaine got to him but didn’t add anything as he already had the EMF reader turned on and was checking the readings.

“Let’s do this thing!” Blaine said, and they headed in.

Flynn was all business now—no more rush of questions, his focus on the results he was getting with the EMF reader.

“We’re going to check out the ER first. It was the scene of a mass shooting, shortly before the hospital closed, where eight people were killed.” Blaine knew the more grisly details they could give, the better people would like it. “A shooter came in—Dave Underwood—looking for his ex-wife, Maryann. He ended up killing her and many of her coworkers, along with two patients and himself. Tonight we’re going to try and communicate with them.”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Flynn grinning and bouncing. It felt good having that positive and enthusiastic energy there. It made Blaine feel like maybe they weren’t wasting their time on a fool’s errand.

They made their way down the hall, stopping about halfway along when Flynn made a noise. “We’re getting a high reading, here by the admin offices.” Flynn moved the EMF reader around, and Blaine peered over his shoulder at the device. The needle was jumping like crazy.

“Let’s try an EVP.” Blaine turned on the recorder. “Is there anyone here with us? Maryann? Are you here?”

Flynn switched on the infrared camera and aimed it in the direction where the EMF reader had pinged. “Ask again,” Flynn suggested quietly.

“Maryann? Are you here with us? Do you have anything you’d like to say to us?” Blaine paused, giving the spirits a chance to respond. “Anything at all?”

There was a lot of creaking and groaning, but it sort of sounded more like the building settling than noises a spirit might make.

“You feeling anything?” Flynn asked, almost whispering.

“Not so far. But let’s keep running the EVP, huh?” Blaine closed his eyes, took a deep breath. “Is there anyone who wants to speak to us? Just talk into the recorder.”

Will and Flynn stayed silent. In fact, Blaine could almost hear them holding their breath.

Then Flynn spoke quietly. “I’ve got something on the infrared. Just shadows, but they suddenly appeared, and they’re moving toward you.”

Fuck. “If you need to speak to me, I’m right here.”

“One of them is responding to you. Keep talking.” Flynn took a couple of steps in his direction. Blaine didn’t know if it was for his benefit or Flynn’s.

“Tell us what you need to say. Speak right into the recorder.”

Flynn nodded and pointed to the ghostly figure on the infrared camera. It didn’t look like a person, but it was vaguely human shaped—the right height and width, even if there was no definition to it.

Blaine let the recorder run, trying as hard as he could not to either move or freak out.

The thing came closer, still visible only on the special camera. He couldn’t see anything with his naked eye. The air got cold, the drop in temperature sudden, and the image on the infrared sharpened. It was right there in the foreground now, almost on top of them.

Flynn began breathing rapidly, quick little pants that all of a sudden became visible, the air cold enough that each exhalation showed.

Then he blinked, eyes huge, and poof. The moment was gone. Disappeared.

Flynn’s cheer was quiet, but it was there, and Blaine could feel the excitement pouring from him. “That was so cool. Could you see anything? With the naked eye, I mean.”

Blaine shook his head. “No. Nothing. I felt the temperature drop. Did we get a reading?”

“Yeah. The EMF was going nuts, and you saw the thing on the infrared camera. It got damn cold there for a minute.” Flynn’s excitement was contagious. Even Will was chuckling.

“Rock on. Hopefully we’ll have some EVP too.” Damn. Damn, that had been cool.

Flynn nodded, still bouncing on the balls of his feet like a big kid.

Above the Fold - Midnight Rodeo series

Cowboy Kelly is Midnight Rodeo royalty. When his family sold the outfit to Darque and Knight, Kelly stayed on as security of sorts, using his skills as a warlock to keep the mundane world from colliding with the wild and wooly rodeo. None of his years of experience have prepared him for what happens when he meets Jon, though.

Rodeo reporter Jon keeps coming back to the Midnight Rodeo, even if he doesn’t know why. In fact, these days he can’t remember anything about his life. He just travels, following Darque and Knight across the country. When Kelly realizes that Jon has been on the receiving end of a bit of magical amnesia, he knows he has to do something. He thinks he’ll just help Jon move on, but that’s before he falls for the guy. How is Kelly supposed to help Jon get his memory back when all he wants is for Jon to stay with him forever?

Kelly Masterson watched Steve escort some guy away from the room they always set up in the arena offices, no matter where they went. He called it the warded room, and even the best magick user might still fall asleep in there.

The guy had all the telltale signs of confusion and dizziness, and Steve guided him out to the parking lot gently.

Kelly made a hmph noise and headed inside to pour a cup of coffee, which was where he found Erik.

“So what was with that dude?”

“I don’t know. He saw everything. Everything. A journalist. Creeped me right the fuck out, Kelly.”

“No shit?” He raised his eyebrows. A lot of mundanes might slip and see one or two things they shouldn’t, but everything?

“No shit. He shorted out. We had to wipe his memory and, man, it wasn’t easy.”

“How long did it take?” Kelly added cream and sugar to his cup.

“Four hours.”

“You’ll give him a frickin’ brain tumor, Erik.”

Erik grimaced, his sloe eyes sad. “I hated to do it, but he’s got some kind sight.”

“Still…” Damn. The kid was cute enough and young—too young to short him out already.

Good thing they were heading out. The guy would return to the rodeo grounds to find nothing, and he would think he dreamed it all.

Kelly shook his head. He thought that they should keep the mundanes out, totally ban them and save this sort of issue, but Cody and Phillip had bought the Mastersons out more than a century ago and they didn’t care much what their wayward son said.

They walked a razor line, though. The crowds paid handsomely, but one young reporter with the sight could put them out of business.

He shuddered to think of the ramifications of that for all of them, for their lifestyle.

“Keep an eye out for him,” Kelly said. “In Dallas, I mean.”

“You think?” Erik gave him the wide eyes.

Journalists were dogged by nature. “I think.”

“He’s forgotten everything,” Erik protested.

“Erik.” He said nothing else, but Erik nodded emphatically.

“Sure, boss. Sure.”

“Thank you.” He knew the man would be back. He knew. Not today. But soon. “Are there any doughnuts?”

“Aren’t there always? The kitchen churns them out.”

“Yeah.” They didn’t mingle with the shifters any more than they dealt with the creepers that lived in the back of the house. Their job was the crowd. That was it. Wards and glamours, crowd control and dealing with angry locals who felt invaded.

“Chocolate cream?”

“I got raspberry.” He shook his dark thoughts off. “Don’t forget. Dallas.”

“I’ll put out a memo,” Erik said. “You okay? This is no biggie.”

“Mmm.” Kelly made the noise as non-committal as he could. He had a feeling, and those were rarely wrong.

“Right. See? Memo. Memotastic.”

“Right.” He gave Erik a smile to stop the babblefest.

“You need to lighten up, boss. Seriously. You’re going to give yourself an ulcer.”

When Cheri moves to Lobo Basin, all she wants is a quiet place where she doesn’t have to worry about the perils of the big city. She’s never had a lot of luck in love, so it’s a complete surprise when not one, but two beautiful local men show interest in her.

Cowboy Josh and handyman Paulo come from opposite sides of the werewolf pack that rules the town, and they had a falling out years ago over the firestorm of lust that burns between them. When they both decide they want the new girl in town, the competition heats up—and so, finally, does their sexual connection.

Cheri doesn’t know what to do with the bickering men or with the bitey little kids in her class at school. Is she terrible for wanting both Josh and Paulo? The boys don't think so, and they'e going to have to work together to win their mate and help her understand her nature—both werewolf and sexual.

Note: This is a previously published work under the title Fever for Three. 5000 words has been added to the text.

Josh knew it was totally wrong of him, but he couldn’t help himself. He left Cheri’s house and slipped around the back, hoping she hadn’t put curtains up on any of the windows yet. He just wanted one or two more glimpses of the prettiest newcomer he’d seen in an age.

Oh fuck.

There wasn’t anything hiding the rooms but those little sheer not-curtains and… Oh sweet Jesus.

He’d known that girl was hiding under those too-big clothes. He’d been damned sure. Josh just sat there with his teeth in his mouth and stared. Naked, wet, Cheri was in the bath, and she had a frickin’ vibrator in her hands.

Curvy and lush, that pretty gal was sex personified, and she made his mouth water. He chuckled at that thought. It could be mistaken if he said it out loud, at least in Lobo Basin.

“What’re you doing, vato?”

Josh almost killed himself turning around when the heel of his cowboy boot caught in a groove in the dirt. Shit. Paulo. He’d thought that asshole had left. His cheeks went hot. “Nothing.”

“Uh-huh.” Paulo’s eyes went to the window and the short little asshole groaned at the picture Cheri made.

Josh pushed him a little, shoving him away from the window. “She’s not for you.”

“She ain’t yours.” Paulo grabbed him, dragging him out toward the desert, where their trucks were parked. The grip on his arm was angry, urgent.

“I saw her first.” He knew it was petty, but it was an effective argument. He dug his boot heels in, but man, Paulo was a strong little fuck.

“Yeah. She wanted me first.”

Josh was leaving tracks in the dirt. It was getting on to dusk too, and he looked at the sky, the hairs standing up on the back of his neck. His skin snapped with electricity, frustration and need rising in his blood.

“Fuck you. Moon’s coming.”

“It is.” Paulo’s voice was damn near a growl, teeth bared, and Josh could smell arousal.

It made his nose quiver, his breath starting to come hard and fast. Between the hot new girl and this man, the one he’d wanted and wanted, being right there… God, he was going to explode.

They walked out to the trucks—there wasn’t anything out here, no streetlights, nothing but caliche and heat, burning up through his boots. His cock felt like a rock in his jeans, a hot one, pressing against his zipper. God, he wanted to bite something.

“I smell you, vato.”

“Shut up.” He whacked Paulo on the arm, finally getting himself free. No one treated him like a naughty kid, as if he was being hauled to the principal’s office.

Paulo popped him right in the jaw, hard enough to sting. “No. You’re all worked up, looking at her.”

“So? So are you.” He grabbed Paulo, shook hard, then gave Paulo’s jeans a pointed look. “I wasn’t the one rubbing up on her like a puppy in the kitchen.”

“She didn’t complain.” Paulo flexed and spread, stood as if he owned the world, hands clenched into fists, hips thrust forward.

Silly man. Everyone knew cowboys were the ones who owned the world.

“How would you know? You were too busy looking at her boobs.” Josh bared his teeth, not backing down. In fact, he figured now was the time to throw a punch of his own. He missed by maybe a quarter of an inch.

Paulo rolled his eyes while dancing back, the look playful. “Uh-huh. Like we could have seen her under all those clothes.”

Josh grinned a little, in complete agreement about Cheri’s clothes. He hadn’t agreed with Paulo on anything in four years.

“She’s something else.” When Paulo said it, it came out “somet’in’”.

“She is. I want her.” He wanted Paulo too. He always had. Fucker had turned him down, which was like the elephant in the room, always there between them.

“Me too.” Paulo took a step closer to him, their chests slapping together.

“Well, you can’t have her.” He bumped a little in return, giving some aggression back.

“Watch me.” Paulo was a short little shit; one hand landed on Josh’s hip, helping Paulo stay balanced. “Hard as you are, I think you’d like that.”

Crafting by Cardeno C.

I've had a hard time keeping positive with everything going on in the world right now and a friend suggested that I take up a hobby to help clear my mind. It started with a wreath and has grown a little from there. Here are some pics of my new hobby. I've been enjoying it tons!

Have a terrific week and find your happy.

Authors Reviewing Other Authors By S.C. Wynne

Hello all,

I know authors are people and they, of course, are readers too. I also know there might come the occasion when they want to review a book by their peers. Maybe even a book they didn't enjoy. My advice would be tread lightly.

Now before anyone gets upset and thinks I'm saying authors shouldn't be allowed to review other authors, that isn't what I'm saying. But I am saying with that "right" comes consequences.

If you think you can tear an authors work to shreds, and still keep a warm and fuzzy relationship with them, then you're probably smoking something pretty strong. Because authors are people too. And people have feelings. If you were invited to a dinner and you didn't like the food, you have every right to scream your disgust from the rooftops. But don't expect to be asked back. Don't kid yourself into thinking because you have the "right" to give your opinion it will be appreciated.

I'm always shocked by the short sightedness of some authors who feel the need to give negative reviews to other authors in their own genre. It can't help but smack of jealousy. And when they say "I usually love so and so's work." But the only review they ever bothered to post was the negative one, it makes you wonder why they didn't also post positive reviews about the books they loved? Couldn't we all use a little more positivity in this world?

Maybe some other authors don't see things the way I do. But I think it's human nature to dislike someone who treats you callously. I think the rare individual is the one who can have someone rip their book apart and then go hang out at GRL and have a grand ol' time. God bless those of you who can.

But my advice is maybe use an alias. If you absolutely think the world needs another mean review, please for the love of all that is holy, use a freaking alias, people! Then you can still be buddies with the people you back-stab.
